When Ken looks for just the right ‘look’ in a workbench, proportion and patina are the most important facets, especially the hand built primitive ones that are over 100 years old. We are often asked for certain requirements from our customers, like specific work areas, drawers, heights and vintage features. Sometimes if we don’t find the perfect one, they are built from scratch using recycled timber we have available. The workbenches are used for many different areas of the home such as kitchens (as a work station), hall/entrance cabinets, studios or for a particular feature in a room. They are seldom used as an actual workbench in a garage!
When we first purchased this workbench we were told it was originally from a Victorian jail and the markings on the side indicated that this is more than likely. Also judging by the timber surface on the top we would say that it has been used to vent a bit of anger…..if only it could talk!!
Apart from a clean up, a few repairs and a light sand in places, we did very little to this one as we wanted to retain its heritage and authenticity. It was purchased by a couple in country Victorian and is being used as a workbench in a garage.
